Are you new to blogs? We want to help make it simple for you to participate in ElderChicks. Below is a picture with instructions and arrows which show you where to click and how to leave a comment, submit a story, read old posts, and subscribe to our blog.
Blogging Dictionary (A partial list of useful terms to help you navigate our blog.)
Blog: A personal online journal –a collection of posts (see below)– that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. In this blog our readers, also called “bloggers” are also the writers.
Commenter: One who leaves a comment on a blog. Our blog has been set up as a conversation. So when people post an article, there is room for you to respond by leaving a comment. You can agree, disagree, add some thoughts of your own, give it kudos or the raspberry. –Remember, it’s a conversation.
Link: To get from one place to another when you’re on the Internet, you can’t flip pages. Instead, you “click on links”. Links are words that are often underlined or in a different color. When you pass your mouse over the word, it sort of lights up. When you click on it, it will take you to a different place on the blog. Here’s an example:
- If you want to see an article that was written in April, go to “Archives” and click on the link April and it will take you to the articles that were posted in April
Post: A post is an article that you write. It can be an anecdote, a memory, a poem, some random thoughts, –whatever moves you– with a title and your name. A blog is made up of a collection of posts.
RSS: Really Simple Syndication. A method of describing news or other Web content that is available for “feeding” (distribution or syndication) from an online publisher to Web users.
Sidebar: No drinks at this bar! Sidebars are columns generally found on the side of most blogs, which have information not contained in the articles. The information is often in the form of links to other parts of the blog or even other places on the Internet.
Tabs: These are the titles at the top of every page on a blog or web site (Home, Tell Us, ElderChicks’ Picks, Etc.). Clicking on any one will take you to another place on the blog.
Please let us know if there are other terms you want us to define. Is this helpful? Leave a comment.
Really useful information and what a great website. Congratulations. I’m a coach and author writing a book called: ‘Grow Old, Be Happy’ because I’m passionate about the fun and benefits of being older. Will follow your site and contribute a blog.
Thanks for that information, it is very useful. I am 71, very active, doing yoga, zumba, tai-chi when I have time. May I be part of this organization, or whatever it is ? I am not so good writing in English, but I am trying. Thanks again, Ruth
This info was a morale booster because, for once, I already knew this stuff! Hardly surprising as I spend hours of every day at my job [still working as a university dean at 73] on the computer. Yet most of the time, especially around my grandchildren, I feel like a total Luddite dunce. Can’t tell if I’ve lost the ability to master new stuff or just have no real desire to make room for all the timewasting stuff technology provides.
I’m 85 and new to blogging. Have learned some basics on my own. Still learning.
At 73, I look forward to communicating with others of my generation. I’m in good health and interested in lots of things but I am technically challenged. Like the women above, do I really need these skills? I did pretty well for 73 years without them. On the other hand, learning new
skills can keep me mentally “with it”. What’s your opinion?
Very informative and useful article. I’ve always wanted to blog, and what a great opportunity this is, because I’ve been searching for a long time, trying to connect with my sisters, other women from my generation, and WOW, here you are! I’m looking forward to participating with such a diverse, intelligent, interesting, group, of beautiful women.
I am a first timer at this blog also and open to new ideas in a world I am just re-entering after 8 months of drama. ARGGGG I am excited to be myself again at 70.
Just found your site, delightful, can’t wait to read more ways to enjoy this stage of my life.
I am trying to figure out how to make a new post rather than a comment.
You can go ahead and send it as a comment and we’ll turn it into a post. Thank you!
