Yes, carefree 50’s childhood indeed. We lived in a gorgeous neighborhood in MIchigan with woods and river on one side across from our homes. At the end of our street was a ball park that we played baseball during the summers and was frozen as a ice skating rink all winter, starting in November and ending in March! That was how long winter was in those days! I went ice skating from age 3 until whenever! I still get out there every so often. I became a speed skater with black hockey skates around 11 or 12– my dad said ignore the jeers and get out and out skate them all! I did. We went after school often, but my favorite time was after dinner–walking to the rink after dark and coming home in a clear, cold winter sky filled with stars, my ice skates hanging around my neck. The rink was surrounded with huge speakers and we skated to the greatest rock and roll from Motown and everywhere–our local DJ’s spun the records and, of course, in those days it was 45’s! Skating to rock and roll and seeing the snow come down out of a clear sky–those memories will never leave me.
What great memories, Allison. All that skating prepared you for your city walks!
Thank you Thelma. Yes. Except lately with various health issues, the pandemic and now this massive cold and snow the city walks have kind of dwindled a bit. Hoping Spring will be better!
Sounds wonderful!
Allison, what wonderful memories. We use to skate on a pond and nights, skating under the stars hand in hand, was the best of times. Roller skating too, although I shudder at the memories of hanging on to cars and flying across the boulevard!
Thank you for the memories and pre Happy💝 Valentine Day cheers.
