At 70 years of age, I have great relationships with younger people. One of my best friends and I are making a podcast about his transition from female to male. (He’s mid-twenties). During the pandemic, I left toys for the neighborhood kids in my front yard (elementary school age). When I was recovering from hip replacement surgery, they helped me learn how to walk again.
I do make a concerted effort to understand their world. I listen to their music so I can discuss it with them. I ask their opinion and ask them to teach me things. What are their favorite things on TikTok? Then I watch it with them. It makes my world so much more interesting and relevant. These people coming up are going to take the helm when we leave. My job as I see it is to learn about and encourage them. They have tools our generation never even dreamed of.
A good perspective! I rejected things like TikTok never considering the value they might have.
Susan, I love your comments. I had discovered as a preschool teacher and before school care, that kids of all ages, like to talk about their world, and by listening and talking, we both learn.
