I have never commented here before although I love reading all of those left by the special women on this site, however, this is a topic very near to my heart and one I’ve been concerned about for many years. It began shortly after I learned about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. I was reading the paper one morning, glanced to my side and noticed the plastic newspaper sleeves in which the paper had been delivered. We had two papers delivered to our home at that time and since it was a rainy day there were not two sleeves but four as the delivery person had double bagged both papers. That morning began my quest to reduce plastic in my life. I started by creating bracelets from the newspaper bags and that is a whole other story but now I also have the paper delivered electronically, use biodegradable trash bags, laundry detergent that comes in a paper container and which dissolves in the wash, cake shampoo and conditioner, etc., etc. Small steps for such a big problem. I worry for my grandchildren. I remember the years that my friends and I met to organize and plan what we might do to help change the world for women. Could we do it again for the earth’s climate and leave yet another legacy, this one of climate activism, behind?
Wow! The changes you made to reduce plastics in your life are inspiring! Thanks for sharing. I have made some changes… cloth bags for groceries, travel mugs for iced coffee, not accepting plasticware from take out places… but much more to do!
Donna, excellent observation and innovative way to “Make do, use up, and wear out”. My Grandmother taught me that and it has saved my planet and me money too . I do not buy any items in the fleece department any more as I read the fleece sheds in the washer and has now formed a very large area in the ocean. I receive a large forest of trees made into pulp for paper as advertising delivered to my door, including the “Conservatory of trees”, yet each week I get several pages to donate to save a tree. If it wasn’t so sad it would be funny. I line my waste baskets with grocery plastic bags and save those plastic containers w/lids to store nails, nut bolts, etc. and a bit of leftover dinner. If you knit, save the larger plastic containers w/lids to put your yarn into and pull out thru a hole punched in the lid and now your cat can’t play volleyball with your yarn! A little bit done by millions of people mount up. It might even squash the climate change explanation of “Cow farts warming the planet”
Hi Elissa,
Thanks so much for your reply! Just needed to tell you that your reference to your Grandmother’s words made me smile. Mine said the same thing, just in a slightly different way, “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”. Something I think about so often in this “throw away” society! Thanks for all you are doing to save our beautiful planet!
Hi Jan,
Thanks for doing what you do to cut down on plastic use. I’ve so often thought about how blithely we began using it so many years ago, never thinking of the potential disasterous results. Now I just try to take heart knowing that the word is beginning to get out there that we need to do everything we can to slow the usage.
So thanks again,
