I have been a crafter since I was 10 years old and joined 4-H. I made all my clothes for my first career. Then went to work for ABC and had to wear silks, heels and expensive suits. Today my craft is repurposing sweatshirts using old doilies, fabric, embroidery, fancy zippers and bingo – a stylish sweatshirt. All my family and friends will be getting one for Christmas this year.
So terrific! Must have been fun at ABC! This is a wonderful thing to carry into your later years!
Even city kids like me knew about 4H. It sounded so wonderful. Great preparation for all that came later and the skills that stand you in good stead today. Love the sweatshirt idea. Maybe a new business?
That sounds like a wonderful project. There is nothing better than a hand made gift. I taught myself to sew at age 7, made my first skirt. My mother had a machine but was not into any of that. My neighbors were, however, and I would run over to their house and they would show me how to do the next step. My 2nd grade teacher taught me how to knit and gave me knitting needles. Knit purl all the way home. When I was nineteen I learned how to quilt and made many beautiful quilts over the years. I was totally into sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, you name it.
Later I realized that I had an eye for photography and I started making my own greeting cards. And I love to write. I have boxes of journals I have kept over the years. I love the creativity I see in myself and others.
A few years ago when my two grand children were little, I brought them into my sewing room to mend something for them. They both stood there with open mouths – they had never seen such a thing as mending. I realized then that mending was a lost art.
