I went to a one room school. Teacher taught all eight grades. On Valentine’s Day she would have us make Valentine’s for our parents — out of page glue, doilies, and construction paper. Great memory. I also like the smell of white page glue!

Great memory about the home-made Valentines in a one room school. Do teachers still do things like that, teach their students how to actually create something with their hands?
Fond memories with Thelma at the sporting club, and our water aerobics class. So much fun with the group including the instructor. And rewarding ourselves on an occasional lunch. Great discussion, and always finding a great restaurant to enjoy lunch. Stay safe friends.
Oh, to be back in that warm pool, Marie!
What a beautiful memory! How lucky to go to a one-room school!
I, too, went to a one-room country school when I was in the fifth grade. Our former one-room school where I’d gone the year before (with first through eighth grade) had split into two one-room schools because there were too many students. First through fourth grades stayed in the original school, and those of us who were in the fifth through eighth grade moved to the new one-room school. Guess how many of us were in that school? Twelve students – eight boys and four girls! That was where I had my first male teacher, Mr. Perry Sherwin. Some things you never forget – like your first male teacher. Every girl could have had her choice of a boyfriend. After all, we were outnumbered two to one. As luck would have it, though, we all liked the same boy! Go figure. I loved that school and have many fond memories from there. For instance, since there were more boys, we girls learned how to play baseball and how to catch grasshoppers and mount them on a board. I believe that I learned more in that school because of watching the older students when they went up front for their classes. I always had my work done early, so I’d stack my books up on the corner of my desk, and then I’d sit and listen to the students’ lessons who were ahead of me in the higher grades. I doubt that chikdren will ever get as good of an education in all the ways I did while attending that little ine-room country schoolhouse!
Golly, Joy, not an electronic device to be found! You actually had totally human (and grasshopper) interaction. What a gift your education was and what great pictures you conjure in my mind. Thank you!
