I guess you could call it “travel”: I would love to get out of this terrible place where I live and *move* to a nicer place. But most nicer places than here aren’t affordable, plus Hubby absolutely loves it here (if he had a time machine, he’d go back to the 19th Century in a minute); so here we stay.
If You Call it “Travel”

So sorry you’re in an unhappy place. I hope you can find some joy in the wider environment of where you live, perhaps through other people and activities. Meanwhile, escape to the eighteenth century sounds inviting until I think about washing clothes by hand and hanging them out to dry. The wet things are getting too heavy for me! BTW Where are you?!
I know whereof you speak! Financial limits have kept me in chicago for over a decade! A hostile environment for me. Trying to make the best of it day by day. It’s an uphill battle!
Totally understand, having lived in Chicago for nearly 35 years. I “escaped” to the SW suburbs about 3 years ago, following my husband’s death — was essentially lateral move, from the financial perspective, and has given me significantly more peace of mind. Although you may feel “stuck”, know that there are ways to improve your situation, if only for a day or weekend, via Metra, the South Shore, or even the CTA. And, Amtrak will drop you in the center of the business district in some of the beach towns on the opposite shore of Lake Michigan for a quick day- or weekend getaway — depending on how far in advance you purchase, fares could be under $10 each way. Having grown up in SW Michigan, I can guarantee it’s night and day from the City and will give you a renewed perspective after a quick excursion.
I know what you mean, financial limits can be a problem. For me as well, only I like our community. Strange thing is that up until a month ago, my home was bug free. Until a relative brought in some books that had hitch hikers. Now we’ve had four strong insecticides to find that nothing is working. So I guess we will be forever fighting this battle, ugh. Not sure overseas travel would be any better.
