![]() What I’d like to see from our next leader is to respect the US Constitution and specifically the first 2 amendments. First Amendment: Freedom of speech and freedom of religion “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” There is a separation of Church and State and our citizens need to be reminded of that. Our country is not one specific religion. The Second Amendment: protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms and was adopted on December 15, 1791, Note the year: 1791. A year which closely followed the Revolutionary War, preceded our Civil War and the “Wild West” trailblazers. For me this means that if our country was invaded or at risk with face-to-face combat, then citizens should have the right to be armed. It does not mean that a person can own enough ammunition to execute dozens of innocent people or that guns can be purchased as easily as buying a new car, or perhaps easier! To stop with xenophobia every time a new group enters our shores. Yet, I am not a Pollyanna, so stricter immigration policies should be upheld. We and our new leader should not forget that our ancestors stepped off a boat or airplane to enter this country; many whom were greeted by the Statue of Liberty’s words: “”Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” |
