I personally am sick to death of all this fear-mongering by Republicans and the media! Every little thing is blown into a full-blown crisis, and it is making people crazy. I returned recently from EASTERN Africa and even some of my family and friends were horrified and terrified that I might have contracted Ebola while there!! Part of the problem as I see it with this particular “crisis” is that people no longer have a knowledge of geography nor do they ever take the time to look at a map of the world. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked in the past couple of years if Wyoming is in the United States!! The only way to return some sanity to this country, as I see it, is to vote Blue on Tuesday to improve and return dollars to the public school system, and to hold news media accountable for the so called “news” they are reporting. It is true 24/7 coverage is to blame and commentators who frame “facts” as questions, so they cannot be held accountable for misinformation!!

You are so right. Ignorance is the mean when there is not enough money for public education.
Claudia…I am very sympathetic to your point of view. However, I fear that deep-seated antipathy toward increased taxation to support our national infrastructure, political partisanship that knows no bounds, continued loss of stable employment for middle and working classes, the sad deterioration of our public school system, voter apathy, and unlimited private financial support for politicians all point to problems that will be with us for a very long time. What will bring a change? Not the media. Our media gives us what we pay for…it can be held accountable only in the marketplace by consumers and we appear to prefer exciting sound bites to serious examination of policy. The pendulum will swing, eventually, but it will take an event or circumstance that galvanizes the nation. We’ve seen the effects of The Great Depression and WWII…what will it take next time? This last recession, as nasty as it was, was not enough.
BRAVA! I salute you!
Another ‘bravo’. Sick to death isn’t the way I’d say it though. You are right about causes of misinformation, but I’d rather say : “people in general are
not taking responsibility for being aware of world problems and choosing
to participate in decision making by being informed, voting, contributing to
cause they agree with, living up to their own standards and imparting them to
their children and other adults.
I love how an open blog can be beneficial to some while others use it as a tool.
Who actually owns the news media and who controlls it in general? Voting is something that has gotten out of hand with all the paid media advertising. The average voter goes to the poll so misinformed and lacks taking the time to search out “true facts”.
The picture posted of the globe is a great example of how education is lacking not only on current events but on who we are. We need to get back to the basics. Yes there is a fear factor out of controll as there is a wealth factor out of controll. Perpetual office holders especially in Washington DC elected not for a term but a lifetime is an issue.
I remember a time when as a family we turned off the TV during meal times as we sat down to share our meals.
Cell phones and TV need to move aside for family time. Neighbors need to know each other and communities need to foster programs that bring generations together more often. Boycotting serve a good purpose if they are for the right reason. Not with people who are hired to boycott which has become the current trend.
