For over the past fifteen years, I have been involved with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) of Temple University, which offers many opportunities for people who are willing to get involved as a volunteer.
I have been teaching Personal & Spiritual Growth Courses, been a member of the Council, am presently, and have been for the past six years, Chairperson of the OLLI Friday Forum, which entails getting speakers for an entire semester’s Friday Forums. I was also Chairperson of the Nominating Committee for many years.
Volunteering at OLLI has given me a sense of purpose in my life, and I am very grateful.
Hi, Iris! Pat Boni here–I remember talking to you (at Elisa’s wedding) about teaching at OLLI when I moved back to Philly from San Diego. You were very enthusiastic then about what you were doing, and it was admirable.
I had taught for Osher in a variety of venues in California–always a “volunteer” enterprise, and I loved my senior students. I think I mentioned to you that Osher always sent a thank-you letter when the courses were finished, and a small honorarium. When I moved back to Philly and contacted OLLI I was told I would have to pay $265.00 to teach a course. I understand that is no longer the case, and I’m hoping to volunteer to teach some courses there.
Hi Iris, It’s good to hear about other OLLI members. I just found out about OLLI in 2011 and have been going ever since. We are from the UCONN CT.WTBY CAMPUS and trying to spread the word out to other seniors. Thank you for being a presenter. Love the courses and the people. Let us know what is going on in Philly. Maybe we can share some ideas .
