That is an interesting question. When I was young and started a job in New York, I wore the latest and newest fashion – pant suits, which for the most part I sewed myself. I was called on the carpet for wearing them but I didn’t have money to buy a new wardrobe, and in my job I was in an office and never saw clients, so they let it pass. When I married, I taught school for a while, and the kids called me a hippie because I wore short brightly colored dresses or skirts and big jewelry, also the height of fashion at the time and also which were mostly made by me. Of course by the time I had kids, I stuck to whatever I could wash easily, mostly pants and shirts. When I worked in the public library, I usually wore nice casual clothes, either pants or dresses, but really nice. When I worked for 19 years in an elementary school, I could pretty much wear what I wanted, unlike the first time I taught. No heels. Not in an elementary school library where I needed to be able to shelve books on the bottom shelf! There was a time when the fashion was to wear leggings with tunic tops. I never gave into that. I felt it looked great on young girls, but when teachers in the school wore them, I thought it was inappropriate. I haven’t worn high heels in about 40 years. I have worn low heels when needed for an occasion. With age comes a bit more caution. I have pretty much abandoned heels except for wedges. In retirement, I wear sweats at home and if I remember, I wear nicer pants and tops when I go out. Dresses, skirts and blouses are strictly for occasions – bar mitzvahs, weddings, etc.
