I know what an Elder Chick is — someone who’s still with it. There is an art to mastering senior life and that is never to admit you’re a senior. My point of view is best expressed by my husband (U.S. Senator Arlen Specter) who said, “If you didn’t know how old you were, how old would you think you were?” I chose 35. A lot of my life began to unfold at 35, traveling to Europe and NYC to study cooking, opening my cooking school, pie business, public life, and now major gifts director. Age is a tag they hang on each of us– too young, too old. I look for the one that says too good to lose. [Please comment here.]

I like your philosophy – “too good to lose”
Dear Joan Specter. . what fun to read what you have to say about not accepting the word “old”. I so agree! I am always asked if I am related to you. . my name is also Joan Spector, but with an o not an e. Since I am famous in my family for having trouble even boiling water, the fact that you are famous, among other reasons, for your pies, has always tickled me. Other than our kitchen abilities, it sounds like we have much in common on the subject of enjoying life. Thanks for the opportunity to say hello.
